Shannon Serrano
Primary Midwife Under Supervision and Birth Assistant
Hi, I’m Shannon! I'm excited to be a student midwife with Shifrah's Sisters. I was born in Washington, DC and raised in Montgomery County, MD. Since 2015, I have served as a childbirth doula to families in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. From my youth into adulthood, I enjoyed supporting family members during pregnancy, through birth, and during their postpartum period. As a teenager, I fantasized about working in labor and delivery as an OB/GYN, but as I grew older, the vision of serving in that role no longer appealed to me. My journey to realizing my desire to become a midwife was a bit of coming full circle for me. My experiences laboring and giving birth to my four children opened my eyes to the importance of care that truly puts the client first. My own labors were affected by biased patient education, lack of follow-through for informed consent and lack of support which sparked a passion within me to ensure that every birthing person have the proper education and support throughout their perinatal period. Through my support of nearly 200 births, a desire to support birthing people in a primary provider role was reawakened. Having gleaned a wealth of knowledge through my experience serving both in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings, I just love attending home births! I am currently on the apprentice path to becoming a CPM. As I pursue my journey of midwifery as an apprentice, I am filled with excitement at the thought of encouraging birthing people to be confident in trusting their body through the natural, physiological process of birth. I find joy in being able to listen to the vision that one has for their birthing experience, as they allow me to share my knowledge and collaborate in their planning and decision-making. When I'm not attending births, I spend a lot of time cheering on my four teenagers in the various sports they play, baking, watching crime documentaries and go for long walks outside. I look forward to being a part of your care!
