Erica hawkins, CNM, IBCLC
Certified Nurse Midwife and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant
Erica is a Certified Nurse Midwife and mother of five sons. She has been involved in birth work for over ten years as a labor and delivery nurse, midwife, bereavement nurse, and lactation consultant. Her first experience in birthing was during nursing school in 2008, where she shadowed a midwifery group in Swaziland, Africa (now Eswatini). She was amazed at the resilience and strength of women and the miracle of childbirth. The placenta fascinated her! She then partnered with some local lay midwives in India the following year as they were learning English at a small community hospital compound. They saw birth as a community outreach and were being trained for safe delivery and hemorrhage prevention in a high-risk area without access to care.
She was first called to become a birth professional after delivering her own son in a military hospital. Her midwife and doula “saved” her natural, unmedicated birth even though it was a long labor in a high-intervention environment. Her background in military nursing up to that point was diverse and included trauma care, surgical care, and mental health care. She is passionate about caring for the “whole person” and recognized that motherhood and birthing are a journey of spiritual, physical, mental, social, and emotional dimensions.
After transitioning from the military into labor and delivery nursing, she was mentored by her midwife manager and encouraged to pursue midwifery herself. She finished her training through Georgetown University and attended births in Lancaster, PA during the pandemic. During this journey, she also birthed three more sons and settled on a hobby farm in south central PA with her family. She worked in hospital midwifery full time, and with the arrival of her fifth son stepped back into part time work in nursing again for family needs.
Because of her own experiences with low-risk and unmedicated births, she has always been interested in community birthing. She began shadowing Elizabeth in January 2025 to explore the world of home birth which she had begun to interact with more through transfer patients in her local community. She fell in love with the respectful and holistic environment home birth midwifery allows for, while partnering with mothers and families to encourage their agency and well-being.
She is excited to continue to partner with Elizabeth to support families in their birthing journeys!
